Small Businesses the Shujaas of Kenya's Economy

Let’s celebrate Kenyan entrepreneurial shujaas!

In my opinion the words Serikali Saidia should be banned? Why you ask…These words have blinded the mwananchi to the fact that our fate and solutions lie in the government and politicians- wenyenchi yet as the constitution states- We the people of Kenya are indeed the serikali. It is with this thought in mind that the Business Inside You Startup Expo (@BIY18) seeks to give back the power to the mwananchi through economic empowerment by bringing the entire startup ecosystem to our maiden entrepreneurship event, shape the startup conversation and more importantly bring out and successfully grow the business inside you

The third verse of our national anthem affirms this with the words “Natujengee taifa letu, eeh ndio wajibu wetu…“ It is time tuungane mikono pamoja kazini and take back responsibility of creating the Kenya we want from the wenyenchi.

It is in this regard that we want to celebrate those that have dared into enterprise, the startups, the innovators, the creative, the manufacturers, the financiers, the mentors and service providers, academia, business incubators and many more.

October is not only breast awareness month, it is also Mashujaa month and we choose to celebrate your entrepreneurship journey big and small- analog and digital; you are the real shujaas that run the Kenya’s Kadogo, national and international trade. Be it your salonist, mama mboga, the mechanic that makes your blue Subaru purr or the juice manufacturer asanteni sana

As the Swahili saying goes haba na haba hujaza kibaba, every small bit we do goes a long way in helping Kenya transform and this month, we will feature the real MVP’s of Kenya’s economy; the people who put food on our tables, clothes on our backs and tarmac on our roads; Kenya’s startups, entrepreneurs and small businesses starting with the people who the Yum in Nyama, game changers of the local Nyama Choma scene Y-noT BBQ because as their slogan says #Youchillwegrill

Who is your shujaa? Tag and share with us  #mfanyibiasharashujaa

A letter to a KENYAN ENTREPRENEUR

inShare 1 Dear aspiring entrepreneur, As I stand on this rostrum and address you, I would like our initial interaction to be as truthful as possible as I walk you down the journey of a Kenyan entrepreneur. They said just do it, really? Just do it- what does that even mean? Like a fool I took their advice and did it, followed my heart and plunged into the Kenyan startup scene; armed with a great idea or so I thought, very little advice and a tonne of optimism I became the latest founder cum CEO in the Kenya. With reflection now I have some advice for you future entrepreneurs… Do you know what running a startup means? And what it is like to be a business owner? Let me break it down for you. It is baptism of fire, I equate running a startup to being a mother; like a helpless baby, new business constantly need all your attention so do your customers, employees, product, bills and in some instances the kanjo. So like a good mother before you startup, nurture your “mot...

The Business Inside You Startup Expo 2018

Give life to and successfully grow your ideas    What is the Business Inside You Startup Expo about?  BIY is a maiden startup event scheduled for February 23-24 th 2018 at the Strathmore University and packaged as the most holistic expo for the Kenyan startup ecosystem. Conceptualized around the premise that there is a business inside each one of us , BIY seeks to bring out and give life the business inside you and should it already be in existence help you successfully grow it.   As it stands, the situation for Kenyan startups is grim; reports from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics show over 400,000 small businesses failed in 2015, an unacceptable mortality rate for the Kenyan economy.  Cognizant of this, BIY18 seeks to identify the challenges of starting and sustaining a small business by converging the Kenyan startup ecosystem stakeholders into one event and offer answers from the basics of starting a business in K...

Amazing Kenyan Stories

At a lunch last week, a media editor was asked why the obsession with politics, corruption and tribalism in Kenya and unapologetically he answered “We serve what the public has an appetite for.” His answer left a sour taste in my mouth and I wondered don’t we as Kenyan’s have an appetite for positive stories to share?  Put off by this indifference, I sought to challenge his narrative by looking at positive things Kenyans can be proud of- brands, individuals and products that speak of successes, aspirations and triumph of Kenyans. I will be honest starting this journey; I had put my bar very low should the media’s assumption be right but less than ten minutes after googling Kenyan brands I stumbled on Enda- Kenya’s first running shoe brand specifically designed for our elite world beating athletes. In all honesty I have to get the people behind Enda to share their amazing journey, but that is a story for another day.  Convincing myself its beginners luck...
